For several months, the LWVGT Gun Violence Prevention Team has been gathering donations that will go towards the purchase of powerful infrared camera equipment that can be utilized by our Tucson Police Department to clearly document evidence in DV (Domestic Violence) and in other criminal cases. Unfortunately, accusations of strangling frequently come down to a "He said, She said" situation. During one of our listening sessions, a judge told us that the documentation provided by this equipment would make prosecutions of DV much more likely, especially in the cases of darker complexioned individuals where bruising might not show up in regular photographs.
TPD has indicated the equipment they need to supplement and enhance their current camera. The total cost is $8,924.29, which includes tax and shipping. We are less than $1000 from meeting our purchase goal. Tax-deductible donations can be made online or checks can be made out to Emerge Center Against Domestic Abuse. Emerge is a qualifying charitable organization for the State of Arizona Charitable Tax Credit, maybe too late for 2025 but 2026 will be here before you know it. Every dollar helps. Please donate what you can and help to make our community a much safer one.
